First Landing State Park: History, Nature, and Living Near One of Virginia Beach's Most Iconic Parks
First Landing State Park isn't just another pretty spot along the Virginia coast. It's where English settlers first stepped onto what would become America, and that history still resonates through every trail and shoreline today.
In April 1607, Captain Christopher Newport and his crew made landfall here, their boots hitting Virginia sand weeks before they'd continue inland to establish Jamestown. That single moment anchored this place in American history. For centuries before it became a park, this stretch of land served as a natural gateway between Chesapeake Bay and Virginia's interior.
Fast forward to the 1930s, when the land was preserved and transformed into Virginia's very first state park. Originally called Seashore State Park, it was built by Civilian Conservation Corps workers between 1933 and 1936. Young men who constructed trails, shelters, and pathways that people still use nearly a century later. The park was officially dedicated on June 15, 1936. In 1997, it got its current name to properly honor that 1607 landing.
A Slice of Rare Coastal Wilderness
Today, First Landing stretches across 2,888 acres, protecting one of the last significant maritime forests left in the region. What makes it special is how it manages to feel worlds away from the city despite being right in the middle of Virginia Beach. You can stand in a forest thick with live oaks and Spanish moss, walk through wetlands alive with birds, cross sandy dunes, and reach a quiet bay beach, all without leaving park boundaries.
The Chesapeake Bay side offers something different from the Atlantic oceanfront just miles away. The water's calmer here, gentler. It's the kind of place where you can have a conversation while floating on a paddleboard.
What Draws People Back
First Landing has over 19 miles of trails winding through different ecosystems, the Cape Henry Trail being a local favorite. The bay beach welcomes swimmers, kayakers, paddleboarders, and anglers. There are picnic areas tucked under the trees, educational exhibits that bring the history to life, and overnight options ranging from rustic campsites to comfortable cabins and yurts.
But here's the thing: for people who live nearby, First Landing isn't really a destination. It's just... there. Available. Part of the rhythm of the week. Morning walks before work. Weekend bike rides with the kids. Sunset beach visits that reset everything after a long day.
The Neighborhoods That Surround It

Neighborhoods like Shore Drive, Chic's Beach, Great Neck, Bay Island, Broad Bay, and Alanton each have their own character. What they share is proximity to something genuinely special. It's the kind of setup that lets you disappear into nature in the morning and grab takeout on the way home in the evening.
