Life in the Middle: The Unexpected Advantages of an Interior Townhome
Life in the Middle: The Unexpected Advantages of an Interior Townhome
What if you could enjoy the same floor plan, finishes, and community amenities at a lower purchase price?
That's one of the biggest advantages of choosing an interior townhome. Often priced below comparable end units, interior homes offer the same thoughtfully designed living spaces and neighborhoods without the end-unit premium.
But the value of life in the middle goes beyond the purchase price.
At Bishard Homes, we've spent nearly 30 years building homes throughout Hampton Roads, and we know that finding the right home is about more than the floor plan or finishes. It's about understanding how a home is built, how it lives, and the value it offers over time.
The Inside Advantage: Comfort, Efficiency, and Less Upkeep
One of the most practical benefits of an interior townhome starts with something you can't see from the inside: fewer exterior walls.
Unlike end units, interior townhomes share walls with neighboring homes on both sides. With less wall surface directly exposed to outdoor temperatures, there's less opportunity for heat to transfer between the inside and outside.
During a hot Virginia Beach summer or a chilly winter morning, this helps limit heat transfer through exterior walls and supports more consistent indoor temperatures. Insulation, HVAC systems, and everyday energy use also play a role.
Fewer exterior walls also mean fewer exposed siding surfaces and side-facing windows to clean and maintain over time.
There's also the question of privacy. Fewer side-facing windows mean fewer direct views into neighboring homes. Combined with thoughtfully placed windows, open living spaces, and intentional lighting, an interior townhome offers a comfortable balance of natural light and privacy.
Sometimes, having a little less on the outside gives you more of what matters on the inside.
Life Happens Next Door. We Build With That in Mind.
Sharing a wall is part of townhome living, but how that wall is built makes a difference.
At Bishard Homes, our shared walls, often called party walls, are built with multiple layers designed for fire separation and to help reduce sound traveling between homes.
Each home has its own separately framed 2x4 wall with batt insulation and drywall. Between the two framed walls sits a 2-hour fire-rated separation wall, with an air gap on either side. This layered construction helps limit sound transmission between neighboring homes while providing an important level of fire protection.
It's one of those details you may never see, but it's an important part of how we build.
And having neighbors on both sides brings opportunities for everyday connections, from a quick conversation outside to someone collecting a package while you're away.
After all, two neighbors might just be better than one!

Where the Middle Really Pays Off
The financial advantage of an interior townhome means something different depending on where you are in life.
For younger buyers purchasing their first home, including those receiving help from family, a lower purchase price can make the transition into homeownership more approachable.
For buyers in their 30s and 40s balancing a mortgage, family expenses, and other priorities, it means enjoying the neighborhood and living spaces they want while keeping more flexibility in their budget.
And for those starting fresh after selling a larger home, an interior townhome offers thoughtfully designed living spaces with fewer exposed exterior surfaces to maintain.
The real value of a home is found in how well it meets your needs today and how it continues to work for you in the years ahead.
A Different Perspective on Townhome Living
There's no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing a home.
At Bishard Homes, we believe thoughtful homebuilding means paying attention to both the details you see and the ones you don't. From the construction behind the walls to the spaces where everyday life unfolds, each decision plays a part in how a home feels and functions.
So whether you're buying your first home, looking for a change, or simply exploring new construction in Hampton Roads, don't overlook the opportunities that come with an interior townhome.
You might find that life in the middle is exactly where you want to be!
