Employee Spotlight: The Brotherhood that Formed Bishard Homes

Bishard Homes has been building quality homes and establishing solid relationships with the Virginia Beach community for over 20 years—but the founders of this family-owned business have been in the area since they were born. With a shared desire to serve homebuyers and their beloved community as a whole, Steve and John Bishard joined forces and started the business together. Q: What made you want to start Bishard Homes?

John: Our uncle was a home builder, and he introduced us to the industry 25 years ago. We had a desire to start our own business and decided to start our company in order to bring unique, high-quality homes to Virginia Beach. 

Steve: We always embraced the entrepreneurial spirit, and longed to enterprise in some way. Our uncle was a talented builder and helped pave the way for us. 

Q: Did you get along growing up? Would you have ever imagined you’d own a business together as adults? 

John: We spent a lot of time surfing together as kids. We never talked about starting a business together—it just happened. 

Steve: We did get along great and spent time together in many ways, but a lot of our memories revolve around surfing. We never thought we’d be in business together, but business was inside each of us and God made a way. 

Q: What is your favorite thing about living and working in Virginia Beach? What makes it so special to your family and business? 

John: The ocean and the people really make it home. We cherish the special friendships we’ve formed in Virginia Beach. 

Steve: We love the ocean and the many friendships we’ve made in this community. We like to leave a positive impact on the city and the many people we know and meet through Bishard Homes. 

Q: Do you have a favorite floor plan? What about community? 

John: The Newcastle plan is definitely one of my favorites. 

Steve: My favorite floor plan is also the Newcastle, and my favorite community is Bayville at Lake Joyce—I really see it becoming a landmark along the bayfront. 

Q: What’s the best part about working with your brother? 

John: We get to see each other seven days a week. 

Steve: Seeing one another grow in many dimensions of life—spiritually, professionally and as a human being. 

Q: What makes Bishard Homes stand out from other builders in the area? 

John: Our company is like a family, everyone has true care for each other. Our team members have the highest level of professionalism in the market, which goes a long way when striving for customer-centric experiences.
