Making Your Next Move EASY

Making Your Next Move
EASY

As exciting as moving into a new house can be, the process itself can be quite intimidating. We want to share a couple tips to make moving simpler and maybe even enjoyable. Here are some steps to success to make your move as effortless as possible!

1. Plan it out

Organization is definitely the key to make sure things run smoothly.

Making a to-do list of everything that needs to be accomplished and scheduling when you plan to get each item done will help you achieve your goals in a timely manner. It’s important to do this ahead of time, and keep your schedule realistic – if you space things out over time, it will not feel as overwhelming. You can even access packing checklist timelines online for inspiration, such as the schedule provided by moving.com

Make sure you also plan for what and who you’ll need along the way. If you plan to use movers or other friends and family to help, know what tasks to delegate beforehand so everyone involved can work as efficiently as possible.

It also helps to keep a master packing list of everything you’ve packed so you can be sure you aren’t missing anything once you get to your new home.

2. Order ahead

Having the right supplies – and enough of them – truly helps the packing process go smoothly. Order a bunch of boxes ahead of time in a variety of sizes to fit your needs. It is much better to have more boxes than not enough, and some places may even take back the extra boxes that you order.

Other supplies are important too, such as tape, packing paper, labels, sharpies, measuring tapes, and any other items you may need. Keeping all of these supplies together in a labeled box for easy access when packing will ensure that you always have what you need when you need it.

3. Label, label, label

Once again, organization is key. Label the category of each box, as well as what is packed in it so that finding items is easier when unpacking. It helps to organize boxes according to what gets unloaded together as well.

Make sure to also label any boxes with delicate items as fragile so the people moving them can handle your things with care.

4. For your enjoyment

Just because your items are in a box does not mean the packing process has to be. Make the time you spend more enjoyable by listening to your favorite music, audio book or a podcast while you work.

It’s okay to take breaks! You can schedule these in as something to look forward to after completing certain tasks. Whether it’s going for a walk, reading a book, or grabbing a coffee with a friend - you work best when you’re energized, so take some quality down time when you need it.

5. Boxes that start together stay together

It often helps to pack things from the same room in the same box. This will help unpacking stay organized and efficient.

A good tip to remember is to pack up your least used rooms first, so that as you go through the packing process you have access to things you use more frequently for a longer amount of time.

You can strategically pack by using smaller boxes for heavy items and loading up lighter items together in the large boxes – this makes them easier to carry individually. Make sure not to over pack boxes so they do not break or tear from too much weight or volume.

6. Moving day magic

When the big day arrives, there are a few things you can do to make the process as fulfilling as possible.

Do not save any packing for moving day – this will alleviate last minute scrambling and stress to finish the work you started weeks ago.

If using a mover, pack boxes in the order of need. Make sure that the boxes you need most are loaded last so they are most accessible when you reach your destination.

Lastly, keep important items with you! This includes jewelry, electronics, or any other items of extreme value to you. This will save you the headache of worrying about losing anything particularly valuable.
